How to Choose Promotional Products, Gifts and Items for Your Business Promotion

by Dave

Whilst we highly recommend speaking with a specialist in promotional products Brisbane who will have experience in tailoring solutions for brands of all shapes and sizes, if you’ve decided to go it alone we’ve compiled this handy guide to help you choose the right gifts for your business promotion. The process can be broken down into 5 steps:

  1. Define your recipient
  2. Define your goals
  3. Set your budget
  4. Narrow the scope
  5. Decide colours/decoration

Step 1: Define your recipient
As with any marketing strategy, it’s a good idea to begin by placing yourself in the mind of your target audience. Understand their desires, fears and values – this will lead you down the right path when it comes time for product selection.

Some examples of common recipients of promo products in Brisbane include employees, event attendees, existing customers and potential clientele.

Ask yourself, who are you giving the gift to? Don’t forget to also consider the characteristics of this group of people – how old are they, what sorts of hobbies do they have, what are their values?

Step 2: Define your goals
It’s important to determine what you actually want to achieve with these gifts, as the goal of your strategy will have a big influence on the type of item you should select.

If you’re holding a trade show, for example, lollies can be great for attracting attendees to your stand Giving those same lollies to your biggest clients as a thank you or to employees as an end of year gift, however, will garner a far different reaction.

Some examples of common goals for promotional products in Brisbane include showing appreciation, launching a new product or service, generating leads or referrals, and increasing brand awareness.

Step 3: Set your budget
There are actually a few ways that you can go about setting a budget for promotional gifts.

One option is to calculate how much you’re willing to spend on each recipient and then multiply this by the total number of recipients. So, if you’re willing to spend $5 per recipient and you have 1500 recipients to gift, your total budget would be $7,500.

If you’ve already been given a marketing budget, another option is to work out what percentage of that budget you can put towards promotional items. This will differ between companies, but most large organisations will dedicate 2 to 5% of their budget to gifts.

Step 4: Narrow the scope
Now it’s time to narrow down your search to just a few product categories that you believe will best meet your goals and/or will be most enjoyed by your target recipient.

If you’ve got a stand at an upcoming trade show, for example, you might determine that promotional products like ‘pens’, ‘confectionery’ and ‘tote bags’ will provide you with the best opportunity at reaching your intended recipients.

We highly recommend listening to your target recipient for generating ideas of what they might like to receive. Ask them directly or post a poll on social media.

Step 5: Decide colours/decoration
When choosing a colour for promo products, it’s best practice to match the colours of your brand. If your brand utilises multiple colours, these can be alternated or you can choose one for the product and the other for the text/images. When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with black or white.

Your logo will often be your first thought when it comes to decoration, but there are many eye-catching options to choose from these days. Don’t feel like you must use your logo.

Some of the common ways to include decoration on a gift include laser engraving, digital printing, sublimation, embossing, embroidery, screen printing and rotary printing.

Breaking the process of choosing promotional products in Brisbane down into steps can help make it feel less overwhelming and ensures that your final gift is something that your recipients will love. We love partnering with businesses that are looking to stand out from the crowd and do something a little different with their marketing strategy, so please do not hesitate to reach out.
